[Paywalled but you can find details elsewhere]

When "free" choices exist, who's going to sign up for expensive services?

Moral: if you've got an internet connection (your PC or your product), expect *someone* to target it, eventually. It doesn't cost much to run an AI on local hardware with "free" software!

The Tenzai site has many articles but sorting out which are PR fluff... <shrug>

Regardless, it explains why companies are starting to look away from the big US players in favor of the cheaper chinese & open alternatives.

What happens when all that imagined business doesn't keep data centers running at 100% capacity?

They'll obviously have to raise their subscription prices and training update fees. It's not like Edge AI is a new concept; they've seen that coming for years, if not outright facilitated it, and presumably worked it into their business plans involving petawatts of new builds. The main thing right now is to get the 'ecosystems' dependent on AI to the point of making it indispensable.

No, I don't think they imagined the Chinese (and others) developing comparable quality products and offering them "for free" (i.e., cost of buying and operating your own server)

There will obviously be needs for bleeding edge models. But, I suspect the largest part of the market will move towards the cheaper offerings as their capabilities are likely sufficient for most of the productivity gains that AI will create.

I.e., the AI that runs your front office doesn't need to also know how to fold proteins in order for you to realize savings from its adoption. (It's actually a sign of a refusal to shed past notions of what an office "looks like" that we still see these positions staffed with real humans. Or, they are cheap enough that the effort to replace them isn't worth the savings)
