I've been discarding NAS appliances in favor of "rolling my own" (soas not to be reliant on closed software and proprietary hardware as well as being able to move a volume from any box to any other)

Today, my QNAP TS-1679U-RP was headed for the tip.

But, discovered I can coax FreeBSD 14.3R (amd64) onto it (in this case, on an external "nano" USB drive so none of the 16 bays are tarnished with OS code).

It's not a particularly speedy box (3.1G Xeon) and I'll have to put some more RAM in it to make it useful. But, it lets me find homes for another

16 spindles (rescued qty 33 4TB SATA drives last week, NiB).

Only important trick is to note box only does UEFI. (plus, of course, knowing how NOT to beat the hell out of a flash drive on a writeable filesystem!)

On second thought, too many better options to choose from! Pull drives and put the box in the tip.

The piss-poor connector placement was the final straw:

(note the connectors are recessed) maybe intended for use by newborn infants??
