Funny specification for CMOS input for microcontroller, unused inputs and slow transitions

Way too small. Try a 1N5821 or 1N5817 and work up from there. On PCBS I oft en use B340-type 3A Schottkys. Ideally it would be able to take the full fa ult current of the regulator without dropping enough voltage to turn on any body's substrate diodes. (Normally you don't really need that much stooch, but start there and work down.)

Well you do need to remember that I surf on the trailing edge of technology . :^) I did this years ago... it was the one comparator we had in stock.
