Damn. The Minolta color laser jet is down (mechanical issue of some sort), so I've been using the HP 2210 (piece-of-s^it) er, I mean "all- in-one" RELUCTANTLY as a backup...
And now I remember why I mothballed it in the first place. What a rip-off!!!
I'll bet a got a whole 50-sheets printed (black ink only), on that brand new $20 cartridge!! Let's see: $20/50, then add my gas & time... Did they see me coming, or what?!
And of course I don't have a spare. (for the report that is due tomorrow).

My HP 1012 laser (B/W) works just fine. Roughly $0.02 per sheet. Colour is for slick sales jobs and other lies.

Yup. If you have the space then get an unfashionable large printer with low running costs. Some reviews do look at the consumables too.
The cheapest slightly obsolete mono laser printers now are down to about =A350 in the UK (actually that one also does duplex). And it is always worth having a backup mono printer. Colour ones are inclined to technical faults at moments that can be predicted according to Murphy's Law.

I picked up a little HP one (P1005) for $49 US including free shipping (no tax). Manual duplexing (actually the driver is surprisingly good, and quite adequate for occasional double-sided printing-- it shows you graphically how to re-insert the printed pages in the paper tray, and handles booklet formatting). Printing is good quality, reasonably fast, it's quiet etc.
It's just a backup for the HP P2015DN which has been in the shop for weeks (after literally hours of working through their stupid fault tree with random Indian call center dudes with fake names like "Jim"). Never had a lick of trouble with its predecessor (HP 1200), which lasted for something like 8 years of daily use until the fuser sleeve finally wore out.
I don't expect I'll buy a replacment cartridge for it, ever. Back in the box when (if?) the P2015 comes back, so total running cost is probably going to be in the 10-20 cents per page range. Sorry HP. And if this unreliability sh&* continues, I will buy a Brother next time, at around half the price for similar specs.
