Faster Instrument Amps?

Hi:



My jellybeam instrument amp is LT1167. It has a full power bandwidth of about 12kHz with +-15V supplies, despite a small signal bandwidth of



1MHz @ G=1.

I need an instrument amp that is stable for G=1 and with full power bandwidth of >=120kHz, putting +-10V into a >=2k load. So that's at least a 7.5V/us slew rate. Also need input voltage range to be to within 2V of the supplies, which should be able to go to at least +-15V. Oh, and typical high-Z inputs, at least 1Mohm CM and 1Mohm differential.



LT has the LT1102, which would be great if it could work with a gain of unity.



Any fast instrument amps that you know of off the cuff before I kill a day trying to find such a beast?

Try AD8130 maybe. It's screaming fast, but I didn't check it against all your requirements. Works for us.

The INA110 is about the best thing going. It would be nice if the input offset were lower, but it has extensive facilities for trimming. It's unfortunate that the lower offset grades are no longer available.

This is an acceptable solution for my immediate needs. I have another plan to build little 0.9"x0.8" or so modules which should provide an external world capable input buffer instrument amp to drive one of many A/D input channels. The INA110 would be hard to fit on that with support components.

It seems strange that there isn't a unity gain capable, 100-200kHz full power bandwidth +-10V out, 8-pin instrument amp out there. It's just one order of magnitude more slew than the LT1167. Slightly degraded offset and noise specs compared to LT1167 would even be tolerable in such a thing.

If I was a linear IC company manager, I'd have one designed.

Very close. But differential input range with +-12V supply is only +-2.5V.

So to realize it's output swing capabilities, it has to have G>1.

What's your error budget (offset, nonlinearity, gain error, CMRR, ?) If it doesn't matter much you can roll your own with three (fast and/or precision and/or low-offset voltage and/or low-offset current) op amps and a handful of resistors.

But I doubt your error budget is completely inconsequential. If it were you wouldn't be using an instrumentation amp to begin with...

Understood. The INA110 and AD524 are reasonably fasts instrument amps available these days, and can meet my requirements. They are just a bit more clunky than I'd like. I'd like an 8-pin device.

Note I am not talking about really exotic specs. Just something similar to LT1167, LT1920, etc. with 8x more slew rate. Like I said in my reply to myself, the INA110 can do the job. It's fast enough. Just has a lot of offset, 16 pins, and only fair noise.

There just seems to be a place for a >10V/us instrument amp with 8 pins.

Note these days there is a plethora of very fast differential amps for video and the like signaling.

An then the division manager raises the inevitable question about how many million Dollars in per-quarter sales this would generate.

Most people clamp away offsets and fast stuff is often done discrete, at least in my field (medical electronics). We painstakingly try to avoid fancy parts and single-sourced is a real no-no. So the market might be a lot smaller than it seems. Semiconductor companies can only live with products that are carted out of production by the truck load. Like GSM chip sets, USB chips or mundane stuff like that plain old LM324. I believe the business model here it is pretty similar to pharmaceutical.

There certainly is but the movers and shakers probably have decided that this place ain't big enough for them to play.

There really always was. I used these a lot in non-diff applications, sometimes clamping away the rather huge offset (or, yech, adjusted it out if in a hurry). I believe one of them was the uA733, really old but blazingly fast just like a 60's Corvette. And dirt cheap.
