The arrival of WW2 eliminated the market for such a flying car, and the Gwinn Aircar crash killed the main investor, so I lost my chance to be a well-spoiled heir with my name on the building.
But flying is far harder than driving, and being freed from stalls is nice, but there are still lots of ways to crash.
I think the theory of those Joby things is that the driver will be a robot, and those robots will talk to one another for coordination. Basically Tesla self driving with a swarm. Which will eventually work well enough to be noticeably safer than human pilots.
