We'll have two interns and some visitors this summer, so we expanded the furniture in our conference room:

And improvements are being made to our research center, on the right.

A lot of older facilities end up needing upgrades once the load keeps growing over the years. Usually better to over-spec a bit during upgrades instead of having to redo everything again later.

Our place was built about 100 years ago. Given that, the power and such are great. My suite was the management office for a big food store, and they jammed it with power and phone and PoE data outlets.

It must be interesting running a tech outfit in, say Oxford, in a stone building that's 500 years old. I worked with a nanotech project that was in an old cow barn in Milton Keynes.

We are just a couple of blocks from the public library where that guy ran the Silk Road dark web thing and where he was busted. There's a movie.

The physical environment of electronic design seems to matter. Green outdoorsey stuff attracts people and helps them think. I encorage my engineers to take walks.

I recognize that. I've frequently had problems that resisted my frantic attempts at solving them, but when I then finally decided to take a walk, the answer would pop into my head almost right away.

It only worked when I had spent enough time wrestling with the problem beforehand though.

Exactly. The answer is sometime just delivered while you walk. But outdoor brainstorming seems to help. People behave different when they don't have eyeballs aimed at them at short range.

I have been fighting a problem for days and the answer popped up about an hour ago. The circuit is posted in another thread.

I wonder if there are any good books about having and managing ideas. Some very smart people just can't do it. Some people have so many ideas that they can't control them.
