They were more than a little dicey. We'd find out about the new schemes when the technicians would complain that some boards couldn't deliver the specified output swing or bandwidth - so the board hadn't been designed properly - and we'd have to dig a bit to find out that they were using a new and innovative setting up procedure which didn't work on every board. Going back to the original setting-up procedure fixed the problem every time.

I learned to use the FEI combo units and spent time both while I worked there and later on learning what I could about the electron and galium units. Also, Auger imaging and spectroscopy. (That turns out to require quite a serious vacuum -- something like 10^-10 Pa, if memory serves. I think hydrogen outgasing was an issue.) It was an educational experience for me. Later, I worked on a method for precise control of the temperature of the electron emitter material (mostly tungsten) behind the Wehnelt cap (supplements the thermionic emissions by field effect.) Turns out that lifetime is severely affected by slight increases in temperature by those midadvisedly struggling for a little higher beam intensity or otherwise failing to consistently maintain precise temperature control.

That was the source of my curiousity.

I wrote in assembler and Focal on a PDP8/E in 1972 at Imperial College London. Before that in 1970 in Fortran at the Cambridge maths lab using a flexowriter to compose the paper tapes. Turnround time about 30 minutes after 1am.

Not in that era, could be a Burroughs or a CDC. I think that the VAXs hit the 7000 series about 1983. VMS is stable, but it was designed correctly in the first place.

I think my first on a PC was ISSpice. Darn vanilla but it ran.

Just a minor footnote. The original architect of Windoze NT was David Cutler, who also designed VMS.

It's amazing how different NT and VMS turned out.

I did my first circuit simulations using a very crude version of SPICE on a CDC something or other at Cal Poly, Pomona in about 1969. I had no idea what I was doing, did it rather badly, and decided that such simulations were a passing fad not worth understanding. Oops 1.0.

I also built my own portable analog computer in a brief case using helipots, log-amps, and panel meters. Digital computers were just too big and messy to fit in a brief case. Oops 2.0.

That is some good oops's. I have enough of my own.

I am still working on learning more from others successes, and less frequently others failures, than my own frequent successes and now few failures. Not that i do not learn from my own, it just is not that rich of a source for my continuing learning.

I guess that it was about 1966 that i understood the importance of Hollerith cards being included in the bills.
