Well, I had a run of boards where half a dozen did that, to varying degrees. The board had large areas of copper pour, and that seemed to prevent the moisture from escaping. Right in the middle of the large pour area, we got some bubbles like that. Those boards had been stored in my basement for 6-9 months before getting stuffed and reflowed. Since then, I take all boards that have been in stock for a while and do the 2-step 50C / 70 C bakeout in the oven, and have not had any blisters since.

I've had digital meters that wouldn't even display in some noisy environments, unless seated inside an open biscuit tin, but then my bench can be a noise hazard during some development stages. Some instruments are more seriously sheilded and therefor less suspect. Most times it's worth checking, just to see if there's a noise influence on accuracy.

The altoids tins are useful for box-within-box construction. You can stick a power conversion or low-noise section inside its own can, with fair reassurance that local influences will be controlled. If you always use a digital scope, this may be difficult to appreciate.

I sometimes wish the cheaper scope mfrs would adopt a similar construction policy. There's one or two here that will change operating state and display settings, in the presence of the occassional breadbooard iteration. As interference is often incoherent, their displays will seldom offer a clue, save for poorer trace definition or difficult triggering.

Results can be surprising, sometimes. The infamous 'oscillators will not oscillate' situation is more common than you might think, in the absence of external interference.

I know people who like to build circuits in Altoids cans, but I don't like mint. A couple of days ago one of my people gave me a mint Oreo, which he loves. To me it tasted like an Oreo filled with toothpaste.

We are in a wooden building in sight of Sutro Tower, over 20 megawatts of various RF. That EMI tests everything from DC on up.

I don't use these things on purpose, only when options are limited or time is short. Spray-painted in the closed condition to mask provenance.

Don't usually know what the contents taste like. I only eat boiled sugar under circumstances that are pretty intollerable otherwise, to reduce nausea and fatigue. By this association, I'll avoid them under most other circumstances, except to be polite.
