This is very good with lower current consumption in bright sunlight, is faster (animations), has better contrast, uses less power, needs no backlight, and can be read day and night.

LCDs my have (had) there place, but my next projects will run OLED.

Oh, and these come with different colors too, just do an ebay search for OLED.

Price is still an issue, but that is starting to change. I think OLEDs can be made flexible too.

No. OLEDS have degradation mechanisms, and I wonder how serious they are.

Basically anything in the known universe has a degradation mechanism, even suns burn out. Personally I think burn in in LCD screens is a big issue, plus low efficiency, I had watches with LCD that turned permanently black when left in the sun. Sometimes my mp3 player display sort of gets a dark haze too (temperature?). You need the backlight on all the time in an other one I have be able to read the LCD. Same for my Nokia, no backlight not usable. LCSs suck: bad contrast, bad viewing angle, bad colors, bad speed, bad power consumption, on some of these issues some are better than others, and it seems to have no relation to price. On top of that those things are sold in TVs with a reflective screen, reducing contrast to the reflection of whatever is in front of it, making it a bad mirror AND a bad TV.

They probably lose their color calibration because they age.

Perhaps I should have said 'primary' light. I agree OLEDS have no backlight, but you still need to generate enough light directly from the display to get enough contrast to distinguish the foreground from the background. I cannot see how this can be lower power in bright sunlight than an LCD, where the only power is that needed to twist the molecules. That runs down in the micro-amps or below. Yes, I know the LCD needs a controller to run, and that draws power, but so does an OLED.

The reflective types cannot be used with good results at night with a backlight they need some light bulb from the side, light from the front. I have a nice LED watch, it needs button press and then the LED display lights for a second, hm actually I have 2, one with a huge display around the arm (like a bracelet), with huge digits in green (the other one is red), I like these, I have no more tiny shimmering unclear useless LCD watches, last one died years ago. The only failure I had a with a LED watch was when the front glass cracked when bringing a large TV set through a door, and it got squeezed...

I have designed message boards with large transmissive type 7 segment LCDs for in office buildings..... Big fluorescent behind, The thing got hot from the CFL and ballast, nor from the LCDs... In an OLED only the pixels that are 'on' use power, and only how much is needed for contrast (for example use a LDR to control contrast versus environmental light), LCDs are horrible temperature sensitive, you always need to measure temperature, not if it is for in the living room only, but for outside. LDCs are slow, more expensive, and bigger because of the backlight, ugly, bad colors, bad contrast, but (the reflective type) is a cheap solution for simple things that need to be looked at in daylight and kept on all the time when nobody watches. For that sort of thing e-paper is better it seems, better viewing angle, no power consumption when not changing, can be bended too. Have not used those yet.... some new Russian cellphone has an epaper display on the back..

There are several more display types, each with their own pros and cons, worth looking into for a new design. Late last night I wrote some bitmap display code for the little OLED... You can make your own bitmaps with Linux 'bitmap', actually it has the 'bmtoa' to make Usenet ASCII art, the # are [O]LEDs:

Yes. Some time ago, I bought ~20 pieces of these units cheap:

They had been in use some time, and you can tell - there are two aging mechanisms that are clearly visible: - the pixels that are "on" age faster and get darker than the rest. This is very obvious on a test screen with all pixels on, but is quite visible with normal text/graphics display. - There seems to be some degradation in row/column drive, making an entire row/column darker than the neighbours. That is in addition to some kind of "bleeding" that even new units show.

Though I have had it for three years, I have only about two hours of use time on it, as it was a backpack accessory item.
