Most engineers didn't wherever I worked. But I remember a lot of techs who smoked and it always amazed me that it was allowed in a labs. Of course, that also allowed for nice pranks. Once a guy had a nature call, said he'd be back in a couple minutes. So we placed a cigarette butt that wasn't fully extinguished into a small metal cap and shoved that into his prototype. When he came back and saw smoke coming off his stuff he ran towards it and ripped all power cords out of the outlets. Took him hours to forgive us for that one...

Many people end up with Sirius rather than XM because of the public radio coverage... which used to be 3 channels (NPR, OPB, PRI), although they dropped PRI not so long ago.

I imagine this wasn't the case with you... :-)

I hear a bit of inexpensive (sold by the foot) vinyl tubing from Home Depot can do wonders in directing smoke from grills in rack cabinets etc.

Amazed me at the time too, smoking was even allowed on raised floors! Smoking rooms started showing up about '89 and then a total ban within the buildings in perhaps '91. We had our share of pranks too. I once stripped the jacket off a hunk of coax and shoved one end under the box a cow-orker was using for high-temp testing and blew smoke. The tubing was so well disguised he went through several smoke cycles before he figured it out. One tech smoked some really noxious pipe tobacco. One of the others took pencil shavings and cut-up rubber bands and mixed them in with his tobacco. He didn't even notice, but everyone else was running for the doors. He stopped smoking after being told.

I find it kind of hard to believe that the guy didn't recognize the aroma. A burning cigarette smells a lot different from burning insulation; more like a campfire, or the aroma of burning leaves in the yard in the fall... ;-) (both of which are illegal now, "for our own good". Feh.)

The San Diego Port Authority yesterday banned smoking on all port property, including parks, beaches, piers and boat ramps.

San Diego County has a proposal under discussion to ban smoking at all county parks.

Not in them days. This was at the university and since students are notoriously low budget they smoked Gauloises or Half-Zwaar self-roll tobacco. That stuff creates quite a stench. BTW, that "metal can" was atually a beer cap with that plastic foam in there. So that might have added some "authenticity". Yep, having a brewsky in the lab was perfectly ok as well. Ah, the good old days.

For you's guys in them thar big city maybe. Not here. People still do that.
