Also cannot find an explanation on what a .KML file is or why they are needed.
Despite three different user attempts with at least one known fully working Google account.
Same problem with Chrome or Firefox.
Very much need to get this to work for the upcoming hanging canal updates.

IIRC, .KML files are used by Google Earth.
KML files look like HTML or XML, but are meant for overlaying surveys (photographic, laser scan, sonar, ...) over Google Earth or Google Maps. You define the lat-long coordinates of your scan in the KML file and it will nicely overlay the survey over Google Earth/Maps.
