If you were a believer, and Tony Blair was a believer, and Bush was a believer, and a million Iranians and Kurds were believers (because their relatives died from poison gas) then who was the liar?

The whole WMD thing is just a blugeon to club the Bushies, but it's not rational, and is besides the point anyhow. WMD were just the public excuse for toppling Saddam, and most everybody knows it. If you want to trash the Bush admin for the *real* reasons for the war, go for it; that's a legit topic for debate.

And no, it's not about oil. Saddam was eager to sell us all the oil he could pump, even while the UN pretended to try to stop him.

And which of those reporters was qualified or equipped to identify weapons-grade nuclear materials? The vast majority of reporters can't program their VCRs.

Please tell us all what the lies are in Hitchens' article.

Just stop the leftist weenie BS'ing.

What? Some reporter is going to sneak onto a university campus, steal "massive amounts of enriched weapons grade material" and make a bomb?

Yah, right. I've also got a neat bridge for sale...

That raised my eyebrows. Is this the new right-wing line, that the CIA is liberal and anything they say can't be believed? So, what spies do you believe?

There's no question there were WMD in Iraq at one point in time.

The question is if there was a meaningful WMD capability there on the eve of the invasion. I seem to recall that at the time of the invasion, few outside the US believed so with confidence - though certain countrys who wanted to politically align themselves with the US went along for that reason.

The most interesting position though is that of the democrats in congress, what became Kerry's fatal problem. While it was obvious to many americans that there was no evidence of any pressing WMD danger from iraq as long so many eyes were trained on it (indeed, that was the solution Bush's own father chose) many in congress chose to overlook this and sign onto the president's bandwagon. In doing so, they then gave up any ability to present a substantially different platform in the 2004 election. Granted, 2004 was too early for opposition to the war to be a viable campaign position - 2006 will not be, however the problem of "the president lied to me and I (pretended to) believe him" not being a very good campaign slogan remains.

Right, it's equivalent to saying "I was dumb and uninformed enough to believe him" which isn't the best of recommendations. So the Dems will have to come up with a fresh, young face who can claim "the Bush deception was before my time" and not have a paper trail to the contrary.

It was not about stealing the material and making a bomb it was about blowing it up and creating a dirty bomb (that is why I thought this thread may have started about this report). These "reporters" were actually media students or something who teamed up and went around the country to "test out" the security at the major universities that had nuclear laboratories. The network cameras were in tow, so presumably it was a fully organised event. In most cases they were able to talk their way in to the lab (or simply walk in) and peer down into the pool containing the nuclear material. In many cases not being asked to leave their backpacks outside or provide ID. The report claimed that several universities had "weapons grade" material up to about 15kg worth or something like that. They also parked a big truck only meters from one of the reactors without being challenged. They also got details plans of the reactor and building from the campus library.

This was a huge story, went for about half an hour, presumably syndicated from a US network? The head of the Nuclear watchdog interviewed seemed gravely concerned.

The Slate article you cited is 15 months old (July, 2004) and was probably written some time before that. So where did we find the Niger yellowcake? Was it delivered in a shipping container, filled with 55-gallon drums?

It should be possible to find someone who has the right balance of a public record of overt pre-invasion doubts/opposition, with an ability to develop that into a message more sophisticated than "told you so"

I'll start with Colin Powell's speech to the UN. Listen to it now, and make your own list. But you call me a dipshit again, that's the end of the conversation. No, I'm out now.

Rich, I'm not going to play that game. Jim doesn't give a G-D-H what I think, he simply sees a chance to name-call and mud-throw. I'm badly outnumbered here and get not even a modicum of respect. My substantive points are clipped, and the remaining fragment is used for more mudthrowing. Forget that blatant dishonesty.

I've heard and read enough of the government's lying trash: Bush has long been written off in my book, and my allegiance has been completely rubbed out. It's a sad stinking dead story now, best not dwelled upon in the middle of this ultra-right-wing crowd.
