Good detective work, but I would prefer to have the OP disclose what manner of battery and camera he's asking about. You're probably correct if it's a recently manufactured camera, as most cameras now use Li-Ion batteries. However, if it's an older Vivitar, it could easily be NiCd or NiMH.
However, since we're playing detective, I tried to guess the battery type based on the nominal voltage of 7.4v. That would probably be two Li-Ion cells in series, which can be anywhere from 3.5 to 4.1V per cell.
With NiMH, the nominal voltage is 1.2V per cell, which would make a
7.2V from a 6 cell pack. Close, but not quite 7.4V. The nominal voltage for NiCd seems to vary between 1.2 and 1.25V depending on manufactory resulting in 7.5V. Close, but still not 7.4V.
