I was joking in alt.politcs.trump about a trump-blocker for TVs



Like you have ad blockers in your browser.



I came up with this this morning after some sleep:



Small camera watching your TV screen does image recognition with a Raspberry Pi small electret mike does voice recognition with same Raspberry



Small IR photo diode for learning remote commands



Program it so if trump appears or speaks to switch the TV to any other channel you want (can program) with a simple IR Led. So no physical modifications to your TV set needed.



Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 powerful enough?



I hereby release this solution as open source, no-bell price you can keep.



For the Samsung TV I have that uses RF for the remote we can perhaps pre-record the channel you want to switch to with an RTL_SDR stick, and some small RF stage to play it (milliwatts) to change channel.



It would be a great sales hit, millions (more than half of America, even more worldwide), would buy one!



It is all yours!!! Improve on it, let us know how to make TV great again!

An easier approach would be to hook an HDMI output.

Yes, if you can capture single frames and don't have to track motion.

A more practical/marketable product would be a SoC with USB & serial ports and some form of network connectivity (WiFi if you are willing to live with that) that acts as a bridge/gateway between a late model APC UPS and your own local network.

[APC has decided to build NICs into their products -- but, only to chat with THEIR cloud service. Bridge the serial/USB port with your network emulating whatever protocol/interface you like]

If you can sell this for something similar to the price of their legacy network management cards, you'd likely have a viable product. Of reasonably low complexity.

Such a device would probably generate too many false alarms from Trump impersonations. Changing the channel, when your device detects something politically offensive, is a bad idea because the impersonations and comedy might be worth viewing:

Instead, I suggest a PPC (personal political censor), that would use one or more AI programs to analyze the content, and mute anything it finds contrary to your political beliefs? With such a PPC, the AI would tag media content and rate it on a 0 to 9 scale. You set the device threshold to a number representing your level of agreement, acceptance and tolerance. If unacceptable, the device switches the channel to something less offensive.

I had a good start on such a device in about 1977. I built a lie detector that measured the speakers voice stress:

Accuracy and response times were terrible, but the techniques showed promise. It also provided a fair indication if the speaker believed the lies he was presenting. Unfortunately, I found that experienced politicians believe almost everything, including their own lies making the device not unsuitable for use as a lie detector. Still, I suspect the idea is worth pursuing in the quest for a Trump free world.

Unfortunately, a lie detector (as described) isn't going to work. In

1977, there was only minimal broadcast audio processing. Today, we have audio frequency shifting (to minimize acoustic feedback), DSP audio processing, delayed broadcasting (to allow for editing) and various AI based image enhancements (for video). Trying to detect and extract small changes caused by vocal chord tension is going to be difficult in such an environment. I still think it might be worth trying (by someone else).

Having an AOC version would at least double sales.

Impersonations (voice) are amusingly BAD when analyzed objectively. The spectrogram's are visibly different.

Impersonators rely on caricatures of the person being impersonated; speaking patterns, known mispronunciations ("nucular"), vocabulary excesses, etc. Likewise, visual cues to further emphasize the caricature.

And, as trump is such a caricature of a *person*, these are easy to exploit, even when the impersonation (in an objective sense) is really poor.

[Listen to Rich Little with your eyes closed and the subject he's impersonating and the differences are very apparent -- and, he is far better at the art than most modern practitioners!]

Isn't that how trump operates? Ignore anything that he doesn't like (i.e., anything that casts him in an unfavorable light?).

Comics are particularly threatening as they often speak the truth in ways that people ENJOY hearing. If you've a fragile ego...

I can't wait for the AI's to be fact-checking debates in real time, their results scrolling across the "lower third" WHILE the speakers are speaking! (Or, advising the moderators in real time so they can challenge the speakers' claims!!)

When you take a polygraph, you are shown the questions you will be asked prior to the administration of the test. I suspect this is intended to increase apprehension/stress to amplify physiological responses.

Probably not. AOC is better looking than Trump and has more sensible things to say - which isn't high praise.

It is not too hard, been doing video tracking in asm with simple PIC microcontrollers.

In the trump case and color you only need to look for an orange size blob the camera man will usually put it mid screen, so check for eyes nose and mouth in the blob, and ears perhaps. Just a few lines of codes in asm, BASIC will be too slow :-)

Interesting thing is also the voice recognition Long ago I did some interesting experiments, but basically you could perhaps do a FFT and look at the amplitude ratio of the harmonics.. Compare it with some reference speech from trump. And look for words trump uses a lot, there are plenty speech to text programs In those days I was trying to read the brain and make a picture of what the person was saying / hearing thinking. Brain reading! I can do it so why not a computer?

What irritates me is when something like a television interview has statements that would kick off the voice-stress analysis, and they altered the audio track to change the tone, it's considered tampering.

My father, in the Netherlands, had a portrait of Lenin on the wall he was left :-) He was a member of the communist party here in the Netherlands. Also was activve in the resistance against the Germam occupation. He was put in a concentration camp by Germany in WW2 and freed by the Russians.

That should have been intuitively obvious. However, it is nice to have one's assumptions confirmed by a machine.

It wasn't a real paying project. The original project was identifying ham radio operators by their voice characteristics during a "net" (similar to a group chat). That was difficult because everyone tended to mumble or speed talk their call signs. It was also rather difficult for net control, who had to read back the call signs to make sure he heard it correctly. Trying to use voice computer identification or correlation was difficult, even if we compared the call sign with a pre-recorded sample by the same person.

Someone decided it might be possible to identify the transmitter instead of the user. Most radios used a PLL (phased lock loop) to control the transmit frequency. When switching between receive and transmit, the divider ratio would also change, causing a brief time when the PLL was desperately changing frequency. To a receiver, it appears as a momentary (200msec???) change in frequency, which would vary with the PLL design and PLL adjustments tuned. On an FM (frequency modulation) receiver, the waveform appeared to be unique and recognizable. The process is called fingerprinting.

That worked, but there was a problem. At the time (1977???) equipment capable of digitizing the FM waveform and comparing the result with a database of radios and operators was not commonly available. Much later, someone turned it into a product:

So, I gave up and decided voice identification was too difficult. The demodulated FM was good enough to function as a lie detector. The plan was to listened to over the air conversations and expose the fabricators of tall tails, which was just about everyone. That failed as soon as the other hams discovered what I was doing. So, I decided to use the lie detector on broadcast radio and television. That also failed, but I don't have time right now to explain.

I've been there. I attended 3 colleges. They all had AM (carrier current) and FM broadcast facilities. I was involved in all of them. No TV.

You have been lucky the Russians were stopped at Berlin, you don't want to live under their occupation. Trust someone who has.

BTW, did the glass frame of Lenin's portrait survive the beard? :D

Lots of special effects in color TV transmissions were done with analog and digital electronics even without computers Ampex had the HS100 slow motion system, basically a huge harddisc.

remember having to replace those huge discs.. Beause there was some building activity dust made it into the machine, and crashed the recording/playback heads Then special fiters were installed. Also remember a burned out disc motor..
