Hi;



anyone used hp316(or equivalent) to protect IGBTs from high saturation voltage? I have some problem with false saturation fault with some



316s. they trip as if the IGBT saturation voltage exceeds 7V but actually they dont. Have you ever faced such situations. is that a problem with the IC or something else. Are those ICs effected by the EMI caused by turn-off when they are very close to the switching elements. do you have any idea??

Do you mean Agilent's HCPL-316J gate-drive optocoupler? Or do you mean HP's older HCPL-3160 optocoupler?

One comment about IGBT desat protection. Whether the desat protection kicks in at 7V or lower, say at 4 to 5V, it should be taken very seriously. Most IGBTs are seriously out of the safe saturation region for voltages above 2.5 to 3 volts, and assuming adequate gate drive, such high Vce voltages indicate they are conducting excessive collector currents. The IGBT should not be operated under these conditions for more than a very short time. Take for example an irg4pc50u, which is a 600V 27A 80W part, with a voltage drop of 1.65V at 27A. You have to push 120 to 150A through this IGBT to get a 3V drop, which creates an unacceptable 360 to 450W power dissipation.
