Defeating the mantis part 1



I have started some experiments to see if that Mantis monster thing can be killed.



This is the setup I will use for now, total cost 40 Euro (56 $): ftp://panteltje.com/pub/defeating_the_mantis_1_img_1545.jpg That is 2 x Logitech E2500 webcam.

Now I will have to write a stereo version of jpcat that opens both video devices and and displays the 2 images sequentially in the same X window. And before each switch outputs 0V or 5V on the par port, to drive the LCD shutter glasses I have:

The glasses were free with the Asus Nvidia based graphics card... but say you buy those for 25 $, now we are at 81 $, add some transistors, Joerg know a cheap address in the far east, make it 85 $.. You need a PC (most here have one) and Linux installed or write it yourself. jpcat:

I doubt that such a system will be as clear or as easy to work under. Real optics has no pixels.

The physical arrangement of the Mantis is very comfortable for working; it's exactly the posture you'd naturally use, only your vision is hugely enhanced. To look around a part, just move your head.

This is in focus: the viewer is at eye height, and the working distance is huge... plenty of room for your hands and soldering irons and stuff.

The Mantis doesn't need goggles, cables, software, computers. I can take excellent digital photos through the viewer.

But it's huge, gets in the way, and I found them a bit too wobbly for my taste when using them at a client.

I just got myself a Veho USB microscope. 100 bucks back then, smaller than a beer can, enough working distance for comfy solder iron work, built-in light sources, plugs right into my laptop while at clients, VGA-sort of resolution which is IMHO sufficient for fine-pitch SMT stuff. Best thing, if I want to document something I just hit a button.

That is true, but the pixels is not the limiting factor here. Even wit h640x480, 640 over 5 mm is pretty good.

Looking from an other POV, in that picture you see so many pieces of equipment, each with their own display, and that Mantis animal too, why not have one big display and have all that stuff interface to that. That would give you network option too.

In the next few years, unless some disaster happens, you will see a multitude of

3D applications and equipment arising (TVs and monitors for example_. It is very hot ATM on the IFA (International Funk Austellung, translated: 'International Broadcast Exposition' in Berlin Germany. One manufacturer after the other displays their 3D TVs, what not. Something new needs to sell, there is a 3D storage standard now for DVD too.

Much of my history is in broadcast and related electronics, it is for me just in the flow. Personally I think 1000 $ for a few pieces of glass is a rip off, and it cannot even record, and does not have a network connection. Maybe you want to do remote work with robot arms (nuclear industry, space, medical). Just doing some experiments to see what goes and what not. That is the way we learn, I mean REALLY learn no? Not by buying an other piece of 1000000 $ stuff to add to the collection. Sure, the mantis animal may have saved you some time, maybe even 3000 $ worth, but is is already an antique and dead.

Biased writing, I know, ain't it fun, I can always start a publishing agency. The 3D market may well be worth billions in the next 10 year. Have you ever used 3 D goggles? I have had those for almost 10 years, very impressive in some games. makes your monitor all of the sudden get the depth of an aquarium.

Afraid it will eat your head? As long as they're well fed, there's little danger.

I like my scopes and voltmeters to have their own displays and lots of knobs. I remember some of the early HP digital scopes that had, like,

4 buttons. Nobody could get them to work.

I use the Mantis every day. My vision has never been good, and isn't getting any better, and the parts keep getting smaller. This piece of optics is stunning, bright, sharp, and truly 3D, not a 2D simulation of 3D. It is visually very, very cool.

So is the 11801 scope in the picture, the one with the 1 GHz square wave on the screen. And the HP35

and the vellum. None of which stops me from designing stuff and making money with them.

You should try a Windows-based scope. Some of those are the real horror in electronics engineering.

That's new stuff. You should see my Boonton megacycle meter. Nuvistor-type tube in the pod, cloth wire, and all. The back is just open. I guess back then they figured engineers are smart enough not to reach in and there weren't as many ambulance chasers. So when you fetch another coil from there watch what you touch.

I have a couple of Boonton analog C-meters. They work in 2-term and

4-term mode. The lowest range is 1 pF full scale. DC bias connector on the back. Wonderful gadgets.

the 3rd dimension could be successive acquisitions l - handy for finding glitches, looking at the long-term 'shape' of jitter etc. Sort of like the intensity grading of higher end scopes, but with the added ability to identify specific samples instead of having them all overlayed.

I just wrote a large part of the required software, compiles OK, have not tested it though... Doing other things at the same time. The software part of the project has a name already: jp3dcat
