Most well designed scanners have a method to address just this need.
You should be able to DL the manual from the HP site as well.
It should even appear intuitive. Well.... to some... ;-]
Usually, one of the ends has a cap that comes off, like the paper stop end after removing part of the scanner apron or such.

Jeez. Three responses from three "folks" and not one actually helped.

All I find on the absolutely worthless hp site is instructions to disconnect power before wiping the outer surface of the glass ;-)

So they at least promise to supply the information, and a support request might be honored.
Here's info from a different HP scanner:
---------- If the 6200C is like the 6100C, which is mechanically similar to my 4C ...
Disconnect power. Take anti-static precautions.
Remove the auto-feed assembly. This should expose the rear Torx screwheads.
Remove the metal covers over the 2 front Torx screw heads.
Remove the screws and lift off the upper case w/glass.
Clean and replace.
Search the net for further platen glass cleaning advice.

Not surprising. They might still have some decent support people at HP though unless they have laid them off and sent all the work to Bangalore. Maybe they're afraid you'll cut yourself on the glass and sue them.

If you get impatient and you're feeling destructive :) And... the scanner is slow and old and it's time to get a new one then do this risky thing:
1) Put duct tape on the glass
2) Turn it upside down and smash the glass with hammer
3) Replace glass with something cut by a glass shop
4) Silicone the new glass in place.. Note: You could also devise a means to make the glass easy to remove for future cleaning. (drop in frame..) The fog up might return. D from BC

Where DO you come up with these stupid ideas? Do you have any idea of what kind of glass is used in a scanner? Do you have any idea how its mounted? Or how critical the thickness is?

If they had only supplied proper instructions on how to perform the task safely, as promised in their manual. By George, I think you have a solid case, should you be so unfortunate as to injure yourself.

It might be like my old UMAX scanner that I had to remove the entire outer case by pulling the 4 screws on the bottom. Use a lint free cloth and windex.

I was unable to locate anything. Even the FAQ search for cleaning the glass makes no mention of any surface other than the exposed surface. Very lame, they are.
