Cleaning Scanner Glass (Inside) hp3970

Anyone know how to dismantle and clean an hp3970?

I've developed a foggy looking coating on the _inside_ :-(

All I find on the absolutely worthless hp site is instructions to disconnect power before wiping the outer surface of the glass ;-)

So they at least promise to supply the information, and a support request might be honored.

Here's info from a different HP scanner:

---------- If the 6200C is like the 6100C, which is mechanically similar to my 4C ...

  1. Disconnect power. Take anti-static precautions.
  2. Remove the auto-feed assembly. This should expose the rear Torx screwheads.
  3. Remove the metal covers over the 2 front Torx screw heads.
  4. Remove the screws and lift off the upper case w/glass.
  5. Clean and replace.

Search the net for further platen glass cleaning advice.

If you get impatient and you're feeling destructive :) And... the scanner is slow and old and it's time to get a new one then do this risky thing:

1) Put duct tape on the glass 2) Turn it upside down and smash the glass with hammer 3) Replace glass with something cut by a glass shop 4) Silicone the new glass in place.. Note: You could also devise a means to make the glass easy to remove for future cleaning. (drop in frame..) The fog up might return. D from BC

Where DO you come up with these stupid ideas? Do you have any idea of what kind of glass is used in a scanner? Do you have any idea how its mounted? Or how critical the thickness is?

That has nothing to do with it, idiot. His stupidity lies in the duct tape suggestion.

Glass might look green on edge, but a piece that thin is NOT going to alter the color of a capture, so standard double strength glass would surely work just fine, idiot.

Wow, you don't care how many people see how truely stupid you are. I know a guy that tried 'standard double strength glass' instead of the optical grade glass. It caused so much distortion in the scanned images that it was useless, just like you.

Replacement glass for scanners, copiers, etc must be:

1) Optical grade float glass, or you'll get distortion of various sorts - window glass is unlikely to be flat & even enough. 2) The same thickness as the original, or the optics won't focus correctly, plus the retaining slot/clips probably won't hold it securely, or might bow it or crack it during installation. 3) The same (or similar) refractive index as the original, or you risk getting any - or all - of: poor contrast, lamp flare, or 'ghost' images, due to internal reflections in the glass.

And yes, Prongy / JackShephard is a useless idiot, but of course you already knew that. ;^)
