Buying Used Audio Equipment

Mar 30, 2009 1 Replies

Hi,

There is some interesting once-near-high-end audio equipment available on eBay. How much deteriation might 10 to 20 year old units (preamps, for example) suffer? From a previous query, electrolytics can deteriate with time. Condition will vary from unit to unit but a general opinion would be helpful: is a unit rated highly when new and now selling for 1/4 its original price a good buy? Obviously, it is not possible to audition the equipment and not all sellers offer returns so it is a gamble.

Thanks, Gary

It's a gamble all around (bad caps, dust, cannot test). Bid accordingly.

I bought a ~15-yr-old, 60 W/ch, 5 ch, Harman Kardon receiver a few months ago on Craigslist. Remote doesn't work so great, I discovered. But I paid $40 for the receiver.
