Thanks. Having a real debugger is nice, though, so I expect he'll probably switch to AVR Studio, which is what I use for AVR projects. (One of my clients is a big ATMega fan.)
He understands about the importance of knowing makefiles and being able to at least read assembly language, but that'll be for later, assuming he's still interested.
