An old Echoplex could. It used a tape loop, and it had a control for the erase bias too control how many loops you heard. They were crap, but Rock bands loved the noises they added to their already bad music. Some rock sta tions ran everything through one of the, including the news.

Compression techniques in regards to this thread are outside my bailiwick. That said, your attitude towards audiophilia creep mirrors mine in the general case. There's more to audiophoolery than gold wire. Excessive time spent to achieve the holy grail of perfection in a audio circuit that already performs adequately is another form of phoolery.

And then there is the /concept/ of perfection.

For an orchestra, is the "perfect" sound heard in the strings section, the wind section, the conductor's podium, the audience first row left/right/centre, or somewhere else in the mythical acoustically perfect auditorium.
