Acrobat reader locks up IE too

That seems to work with Firefox as well. My bet is it's an Adobe problem... they're more f...ed up than M$ ;-)

That's one of the reasons I detest those 'hidden' links that start a PDF

-> browser. If you're going to send me to a PDF, then display the link in my status bar (which I do not permit to be hijacked), don't do kiddie trickery so I can't see the bloody filename.

If I don't happen to have Acrofat running already, then *as long as I start it before I try to close the browser window*, everything will be fine (all versions of Firefox and Firebird before it), but I have to make sure I start it.

Others that use this system come running about 'it's locked up' on occasion ;)

Fox seems to work better if the Adobe reader is "external", namely not a plugin, just another system program that opens files, like Word or something. If you set it up that way, you get the "save/open" dialog when you click on a pdf link, which is fine with me. Adobe opens as another task, so can't crash the browser.

Tools/Options/Plugins, I think.

Adobe must hire the people that Microsoft fires.

I'm using Firefox 2 and it's better than before. Slicker, cleaner, and automatic plugin updates (to say nothing of list based _or_ web based phishing site protection). Even more customisable than before - and that's saying something.

Seems to be faster, too.

On the anti-phishing, I also point to opendns.com for dns resolution. Fast (even from the UK) and has a phishing site database built-in. Free, too. Really nice.

Its OK, if it crashes (3 times in 3 days) mainly on really complex video type sites. Comedy Central vids dont work on my setup. It remembers where it was, and occasionally sends an error report in. basically, you dont realise you are using it, which is how it should be. BTW I dont use Necrobat bleeder, just foxit, which opens up independantly and quickly, and Getright for big file downloads >10MB

"It is crashed" is probably more apt. Do you think you could manufacture working products if your supplier was shipping you crap components?

I'm with John L. I don't like PDFs opening in the browser. I have Firefox display the PDF in the reader outside of FF. I primarily use FoxitReader for my PDF reader. Way faster than Acrobat, although, some PDFs don't display properly in Foxit. I've also started using PDFcreator (acts like a printer driver) to generate PDFs. Way faster than Acrobat. PDFcreator can also generate picture images in many formats (png, bmp, tif, ps, jpg, ...).

While I'm praising free software, I've been using FreeMind to map out projects. Basically a freeform flow chart tool. Requires Java runtime environment 1.4 or newer. Highly recommended.

Jim, I don't like the new close Tabs layout on FF. Fortunately, you can change close tabs layout back to the original format so the close tab is at the far right instead of on each tab. You can also make the interface look like the old version 1.5 instead of the kiddy look they gave it.

I'll give that a try. I'm fond of flow-charting ;-)

I never used TABS until v2... I like it ;-)

I like only one close button at the very end of the tab line. Makes scanning a bunch of web sites easier. To make this sort of change, and hundreds of other changes, type in "about:config" for the URL.

A slightly dangerous change to allow PDFs to be opened from misconfigured web servers: ============================================================ In Mozilla\\components\\nsHelperAppDlg.js , search for "hide feature choice". On the next line, change to false. i.e.: this.mDialog.document.getElementById("normalBox").collapsed = false; Danger, this will allow you to run downloaded evil files from the browser. Don't do this if other people use the computer. This problem occurs on servers that do not apply a proper MIME type to PDF files. FF2 is strict about MIME types. GooglePages is one such server.

That's probably possible using ghostview (save marked pages) and then ps2pdf to convert back to pdf.

AIUI pdfps conversion is lossless as far as detail is concerned, but maybe you'd lose hyperlinks
