First, note that MS is working hard on supporting 64-bit ARM servers.
Second, for many types of servers (such as web servers, publicly accessible email servers, DNS servers, database servers, clusters, supercomputers, etc.), Linux and *nix (including Unix, BSD, and unidentified Linux) dominate.
There are plenty of corporations who will stick to Windows and x86 because that's what they know. But small corporations (where money matters more) and large corporations (who can invest in changes that lead to big savings overall) are not dominated by Windows on the server side.
Obviously the availability of Windows server for ARM64 will greatly help sales of ARM64 systems - but I would expect Windows to be the niche choice on an ARM server.

Ok, so this is nothing that would be a basis for a change to my opinion. ;)
I think that is what I have been saying. ARMs are not at all entrenched and are an insignificant share of the market, much less the installed base.

Hmmm... you seem to be backsliding... "well on their way here" means they *aren't* here yet.
I have been talking about "real" servers. The ones that power the Internet. If you are going to bring up this sort of thing, why not mention the rPi?
Great. But that is not the point. The point is that ARMs are not powering the Internet and won't be for some time to come. I'd say *if* the switchover happens it will be 5 to 10 years out.

Thank you for the pointer, I completely forgot the Nokia Windows phones and now they even tried to build a Windows tablet.
It is still several years until we se a Windows Server based on ARM.

This is Usenet - does anyone here ever expect to change another poster's opinions? I this particular case, no, I would not expect anyone to take my thoughts (or those of others) here for more than the worth of the pixels they are written on without at least some references or personal experience to back them up.
I don't think we disagree about the current state of off-the-shelf ARM servers that you can buy now, or that have been deployed. What we disagree on seems to be the preparation for future production and sales, and the expected sales and deployments in the near future.
I brought up these devices because they /are/ servers, often running ARM cores, that have been popular for many years. They are not /web/ servers (usually) - but they are file servers and media servers, using dedicated hardware bought specifically for that purpose.
If we are going to talk about specific types of servers, then we really should define them. And if you want to talk specifically about "the ones that power the internet", then they are not ARM today - but they are key targets for future ARM servers. Big datacenters like Facebook and Amazon are designing their own ARM SoC's to be the most efficient devices for running /their/ particular server applications. (No, they are not ready yet - but yes, they will be in the near future.)
ARMs are not "powering the Internet" today - on that we agree. Will they ever be dominant - powering more than 50% of internet-connected servers? I have no idea - that is too far to see. But will they become a major part of the Internet, running large datacenters and also smaller servers? Yes, and I don't think it will take 5 years to get to the point when new datacenters will be likely to be ARM powered, or when IT managers include ARM servers in their comparisons when choosing new hardware.
But we won't know the answer for another few years!
