Where is the darn piezo (with pics)

I have this brand new garmin vista GPS

The alarm sound/beeper is just not loud enough. It is a little louder than a watch, and I need it to be about as loud as a cell phone. (I use it on a locomotive)

I have it apart and cant find the piezo to even start thinking about altering or replacing it.

Check out the pics .. note .. it has electronic compass and barimetric pressure. so .. the thing in the middle with with the ferrite looking thing, I think is the compass.

anyways .. some pics

here is the whole board

here is a close up of the ferrite thing

It might be in the case shell. Psion organisers used that method, they used tiny springs to contact to the board just like the pads on each side of that ferrite thing's area. I'm guess in this case those could be power supply input though.

If you can get power to it while it's open, make it beep and track the source with a bit of cable sheath used as a stethoscope.

I Googled Kingstate Piezo. Guess What?

BTW the ferrite thingy appears to have two pins shorted.

That looks to be intentional, from what I can see in his image. I'd want to be taking a closer look at it to be certain, though.

Or look at this:

which is close in part numbering and general arragement except for the hole in the top so perhaps yours has a hole underneath.

Or this even which I believe is the exact match.

(I first thought the 'J' was a '3' poorly printed!)

now if i can just figure out how to remove it without having access to the other side of the circuit board ..

thanks again mike

Add a couple of wires to reconnect it for testing, then try opening up the exit ports to let more sound out.

thanks Graham .. thats a good idea ..

IF I do have to replace it .. my research has actually made me more confused ..

??????

piezo speaker piezo transducer piezo WITH driver circuitry on board piezo needing driven by outside circuitry

I am hoping that as long as the current draw .. and voltage needs are close .. that I can "try" another piezo.

Turn down the volume on the locomotive :)

Maybe try attaching a single ear earphone to the outputs (+ -) and see if you can get a beep reaction through them. Then just simply plug the earpiece into your ear . You know those OLD types that were white and looked almost like a hearing aid with a long wire attached.

I have looked for that damn volume control on the engine and just cant find it. grin

actually .. I just bought a whole bunch of different piezo's and tried them all and actually found some that were pretty much louder than the original and have wired one in ..

much better now ..
