OT: pcanywhere versus gotomypc ??

If one of these is sold by Norton Lambert (my old company), I would use that one. Their product testing is quite extensive.

Note that if you use WinXP as the "home" host machine, you don't need either. The terminal services client is a free download.

The VNC protocol is readily tunneled (thru SSH or other tunneling protocols) to provide secure access to a computer.

I don't use XP and am reluctant to begin using it... I'm not fond of software that "calls home" ;-)

We used Norton Lambert Close-Up for many years. It's professional software, and I highly recommend it.

I went to their website and read the comparison between PCanywhere and Close-Up. Looks like there IS no comparison!

I think you should have gone to your son-in-law (or whoever the software guru is in your family) and asked him to eveluate PCanywhere, etc. You still should.

So far, three different version of VNC have been recommended. And it looks like all of them are crippleware of sorts, you get the free version with limited features and have to pay for the full featured version with encryption, etc.

I just wonder what the diff is between th three, and which is better than the others. The cross platform has some value, but most of them will end up on Windoze machines. I think back in 1998, we used an earlier version on a classroom of Macs. The instructor was trying to slave all of them to his Mac, and it didn't work very well so he stopped and went back to the video projector.

Oldest son. Sons-in-law are a bean counter at Honeywell and a lead prosecutor in Yuma County... presently investigating that 6-person murder that's making the national news.

I believe that the oldest son uses PCanywhere, but I've far pickier than he... I'm a user, he's only a programmer ;-)

I liked the speed numbers that Norton-Lambert bragged.

I believe you can set the windows client up to be the server. And you can tunnel in from another client.

It works very well via slower modem connections.

How does this sort of remote operation software handle the situation, in many hotels, where the "connection" is only via a browser?

Good question Jim.

Most hotels dont block ports as long as a free port is available the end user can access the remote pc.

In the case of a port block, since most people have a isp they could dial their isp and connect that way.

I run a large network. I monitor many pc's remotely. radmin is by far the best remote administration software in a small byte size thats available today.

Works like a champ.. try the demo, you will bre hooked in no time flat..

Its similar to RDP, but in my opinion its far better for a number of reasons. For example the screen refreshes are very quick whil controlling the remote PC, this is great if you dont happen to have access to dsl.

The server part of the software "What you install on the pc" you wish to control offers the ability to use any port, it also offers password auth, encryption, good logging. Ability to restrict connecting IP's etc. File upload and download, telnet ..

To get a feel for it.. just download it and try it.

I like it , its about the best I have found.

Hi, I found RDP on XP to be by far the fastest remote software I know, especially on slow connectons and slow PCs (controlling a XP2600+ from a P133 laptop through WLAM with big distance (only 2MBit rate). Is radmin really faster than RDP on such an old machine running Win98? Greg
