Can anybody explain to me about mentor graphics?

Can anybody explain to me about mentor graphics? Where can I possibly find a manual for beginners. Now I am using Mentor Graphics for extracting information. As my senior had told me to do, I needed to open the design manager. Then I needed to select the file I want to view, say: Design Object, I don't know, and then I needed to go to Board Process by right mouse click. Then I saw Board Design Process. Then I needed to do view point latch. Then I need to execute Board Design. There poped out Board Design Flow. Then I needed to execute and complete Schematic Entry and Layout Place & Route. After that I needed to executesynchronization. Actually I just do not know why I needed to do all this. The purpose is I want to put the layout and artwork diagrams together for some service maunals. Can anyone show me the starting point to learn Mentor Graphics Platform.??

Gradually I found that the product I am using is Mentor Graphics Software executing under Sun SPARC Solaris in association with Hummingbird.

They use Hummingbird ConnectivityTM, containing Hummingbird Neighbourhood for Windows 2000/XP/2003 Version 11.0 for working on the data stored in server from client computer, Exceed on Demand for running application Mentor Graphics handled by Sun SPARC Solaris Server

on WindowsXP Platform.

So generally I understand the working scheme of the environment I am working on.

I am an electronics engineer and I just wanted to specialize in Design and Development of Mixed Signal and Power Electronics.

Anyway I need to learn the EDA environment too.

The problem is how much I need to go in depth in these software applications while I still have to learn the detailed design of Electronics

I needed to open Hummingbird Exceed onDemand software first.

It has a command editor which has a title: Platform V2.7.

Then I have to choose the PCB Technology.

After choosing the PCB Technology (class 5 wave, class 3 wave, etc..), there comes the Design Manager.

By clicking Help>more help>on version; I found Falcon Framework v8.10_3.1.

Then there comes the FlowXpert board process, if I wish to synchronize the lay out and Schematic.

And if I wish to print Lay out + Art work; there comes fablink.

If I want a separate artwork, I need to create art data from fablink and then, I need to type gerberview -f from the command editor.

I do not know how the softward of Mentor Graphics organized!

I guess the most insulting part is that our bosses think these folks are a good substitute for us.

To the OP, my advice is to get your "senior" to pony up for an airplane ticket, a hotel room in Oregon, and a few weeks of training at Mentor.

You posted this in sci.electronics.design several days ago, under the name "myauk", as I remember, and received several useful replies, including a link to the Mentor Graphics forums :-

Couldn't they help you there?. This is probably too specialised for this group. I would suggest that you re-post at the above link, for useful info. (Homework, I'd guess, by the sound of it.)

No worries - sounds like you're being sent in circles, wish I could help. I just had a (quick) look at your post in the abovementioned group. It looks like you need to post a specific question in the "Tech Discussion/PCB Systems" sections, relating to one of their products. Exactly which of their products are you using? Mentor Graphics appear to make many different products. Have you checked out the "FAQs" section? "Mentor Graphics" in itself means little. Which product and version are you using. Have you looked at the software's "Help"? If I were you, I'd spend a couple of hours, or however long it takes, thoroughly checking out their website. You'll probably find what you're looking for. I just spent 5 minutes there and found heaps of resources.

Thanks Johnny

Actually, I was just confused with several things before getting used to the new environment internationally.

I think the Mentor Graphics Software I am using is a package contains FlowXpert, Design Manager, and Layout, FABLINK tools. ( I suppose that it should be Mentor Graphics Expedition ). Actually it is not my duty to understand everything. I am working at Philips Consumer Electroncis in Singapore under MJM networks professional placement. All I have to do is to create service documents for service manuals. I need to synchronize the lay out and artwork. Then I prepare aperture settings, artwork format and several things before creating artwork in Gerber format. After that I convert Gerber to Postscript with gerverview. But I would like to know more about Mentor Graphics. My desire to understand and use EDA tools well and to become an Electrical Design Engineer drives me crazy to learn more about Mentor Graphics.

I think Mentor Graphics might develop some customized software package for Philips. More over I am just an engineering assistant and so I am afraid the system administrator or my senior engineers would annoy with me. Since eagerness to learn much should not go beyound my authority and responsiblity and it is not very clear that I should learn Mentor Graphics or not.

They are so busy with several things to answer my questions so I think I need time to understand the situation and restrictions before doing anything serious.

I hope my special interest studies on Mentor Graphics Software Package, Unix environment and Library Management system might not cause negative effect on the company because of my foolishness.

However I have been a part of Mentor Graphics Users Forum for two days.

Thank you very much for the guide lines and your kindness

Regards

Ask them where the user's manuals are -- if they don't know, you can probably find them as PDF files on your system.

It's good to be concerned that your "enthusiasm" doesn't inadvertently hamper others' productivity, but in general you should be commended for wanting to do more that strictly what your job description entails; it isn't foolishness at all.

Thank you very much for your encouragement and compliments

I do not know much but Mentor Graphics is somewhat related to data base management systems and network applications.

I am beginning to ask my friends about Object Oriented concepts.

Since I would like to be a professional engineer in electronics I think I should have a basic understanding of EDA and I should be able to use the EDA tools effectively.
