charge before use

Many electronic products (such as phones) will say to charge the device for

12 or so hours before using it.

Why is this necessary, and what will happen to the batteries if you don't do this?

** It helps avoid silly complaints to sellers about short run time.

Most folk have no idea that rechargeable cells * self discharge * while in storage - so expect their new phone to come with a fully charged batteries.
