OT: First Day at School

I spent a bit too much time in the UK with people who had been indoctrinate d with idea that they, and people who spoke like them, were superior, and e verybody else was some kind of spear-carrier.

There's nothing particularly "socialist" about liberty, equality and frater nity - they are essentially radical enlightenment ideas, and predate social ism by a century or two. The fact that they haven't yet got to you - a prod uct of the UK education system - is evidence that UK education still has it 's unfortunate cesspits.

The fact that there are any schools around that meet with Jim's approval is somewhat depressing. Jim is regrettably ignorant, and any school worthy of the name would be teaching his grand-kids facts that Jim would not believe to be true or correct.

Naturally there are schools around that cater to the whims of right-wing lu natics, particularly in the US, where the whims of the wealthy are remarkab ly influential, which is part of the explanation for the fact the US is goi ng to hell in a trumpery handbasket. Obviously, this isn't the only problem they've got, but it's definitely an aspect of the central problem.

Consultant: "Gimmee your pocket calculator and I'll tell you".

A modern scientist would need Mathcad or MatLab to solve this, then write several papers about it.

Maybe I can and maybe I can't. I base my estimates on things like you own two apartments in Sidney and a house in Europe and take fairly frequent tr ips to Europe. A subscription to " The New Yorker " has been ignored, but considering that you think it indicates social status maybe I should consid er it as a negative indicator. Another possible negative indicator is that you hesitate to spend the money to build the oscillator you spent so much time on the design. But I figure it is more that you do not build things for enjoyment.

Your mistake it thinking that you know me. I pick up on a lot of things th at I never comment on.

I like the Yiddish expression "Mensch ist mensch", and over the years I've grown to appreciate the wisdom of "people are people, the whole world over".

Those that want more privately-funded schools would do well to consider how they would manage to keep them from becoming Madrassahs.

Absolutely. When my children were in high school we hosted many exchange students... indeed "people are people, the whole world over".

(And I'm a "mensch"... my Jewish daughter-in-law asserts so :-)

Not necessarily... a high percentage of the "charter" schools in Arizona are strictly "fundamentalist" 3-R's: reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic.

Of course we have some religion-oriented ones, but they are a small percentage. ...Jim Thompson

We've had various varieties for a long time, particularly - "Church of England" in two variants (one "in name only", the other a /little/ more zealous) - RC which can be very variable from the fairly innocuous to the downright disgustingly disreputable (some teachers and governors are in jail for a very long time) but there has been a recent tendency to have Islamic schools with allegedly some dubious practices such as girls sitting at the back of the class and worse. It is /very/ difficult to sort out the actual extent of their "Madrassah-like" behaviour, since there is a lot of emotion involved.

It is all made worse by our Education Secretary[1] promoting "free schools" (i.e. outside the control of local authorities). Worse, they are outside the control of OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills). That means they are the direct responsibility of the Education Secretary - who /really/ dislike it when people point out that he can't pass the buck to OFSTED.

It is a classic case of "being hoisted by your own petard", which would be /very/ entertaining if the subject and consequences weren't so serious.

[1] a particularly oleaginous individual (Michael Gove) that always reminds me of Sir Richard Rich in the play/film "A Man For All Seasons".

We own one apartment in Sydney and rent the one next door. We don't own a h ouse in the Netherlands but an apartment - we did own a house until 2010, b ut sold it in the process of getting ready to move back to Australia. We ma ke trips to Europe every year - that doesn't strike me as frequent.

In the company you keep it might - literacy isn't your strong suite.

ey to build the oscillator you spent so much time on the design. But I fi gure it is more that you do not build things for enjoyment.

I'd be happy to spend the money if I had any kind of potential customer. I' ve got roughly $1000 worth of parts hanging around from when I was on the v erge of building a previous version. The problem is a certain lack of enthu siasm for getting down to the tedious task of creating a netlist, a parts l ist and a printed circuit layout.

that I never comment on.

I don't know you. I just know that you get stuff wrong that you shouldn't.

You'd have to be an empty headed pretentious twit to read every issue, cove r-to-cover. It's aim seems to be cover a wide range of interests - none of them as low brow as yours. Every now and then it publishes stuff that is re markably good, which compensates for a great of playing to the pretentious twits.

In my family, only my uncle had a subscription. He was definitely pretentio us, but he was a D.Sc. and no twit - at one point both his sons were profes sors at the university of Adelaide, which thrilled him no end, but it didn' t last. Neither of the professorships delivered what had been promised so b oth of them moved on.

And only empty-headed prentious twits post links to U-tube. I've snipped yo urs.

I'm sure that it is read by snobs, some of whom will have gender identity issues. It doesn't seem to be the target audience, and never was.

Tina Brown edited it from 1992 and 1998, and cleaned it up no end.
