Re: Prohibit the use of recycled sewerage effluent for drinking
purposes...

Good afternoon to all,
This e-petition is real and genuine. Dr Vinesh Oommen is a PhD student
at QUT but he has worked in research projects in various parts of the
world for WHO. Therefore, I take his email below quite seriously and
for the first time in my life have actually bothered to sign an e-
petition. I urge you to consider doing the same.

Have a nice weekend.

Vinesh Oommen

Dear Colleagues,

This is the most serious thing that has ever happened to you.  In the
new year Anna Bligh is going to put recycled toilet water (not
desalinated water from Tugun). This will include toilet water,
industrial factory, morgue and hospital waste that will go into our
dam drinking supply.

This has not been done in any other country in the world and I have
researched this and she has been advised by all the scientists not to
do it as drugs such as ice, the morning after drug, hormones and many
other things such as radiation from chemotherapy cannot be totally
removed from the water no matter what process you use.

Serious birth defects, miscarriages and many other viruses will
contaminate our precious drinking water.   Singapore uses 1% of their
toilet water as they have no fresh water and it is stated that they
are amazed that we are even contemplating using between 10-25% sewer
water and never has another country done it.  This is very serious,
our water is our life and our health system would never cope with the
catastrophe that is predicted if she does this.  If you don't care
about yourselves think about your children and sign this petition and
forward it on to everyone on your email list.  Please!!!!!  Note the
number and put down your details this is our future!!!

Please pass this on to as many people as possible. You owe it to your
family and future generations.

Prohibit the use of recycled sewerage effluent for drinking purposes

Please sign the petition once you click on the link belowEF%BFBD%

Brisbane's water grid will soon be delivering recycled effluent/
sewerage as well as hospital waste, mortuary waste and industrial
waste to householders to be used for domestic purposes (drinking,
cooking, bathing).  This is a first-in-the-world living experiment
using a large amount of recycled water (Singapore adds only about 1%
of recycled water to its water supply).  Not all pharmaceutical drugs
can be filtered from this waste product.

If you are any of the following - a Queensland resident, a Q'ld
citizen or a Q'ld elector in a nominated electorate - you are eligible
to sign the E-Petition to "Prohibit the use of recycled sewerage
effluent for drinking purposes".

This E-Petition can be accessed via the following link:

Re: Prohibit the use of recycled sewerage effluent for drinking

**Queenslanders are too stupid to breathe. ALL water is recycled. Every
single molecule. The Queensland government will need to institute water
recycling sooner or later. As will all the cities in Australia. May as well
get used to it now.

That is indeed true that all water is recycled.

The problem is that if you had lived under the QLD state government's
barely hidden incompetence and corruption at pretty much all levels,
as well as the open contempt
it shows to QLD citizens you would understand that this government
couldn't be trusted to keep the
maintenance and equipment and therefore the water quality up to
standard. They already admit to not having
technicians and specialists to maintain the infrastructure that's
already there.

I also know a water treatment specialist, he has serious concerns
about the
heavy metals found in excrement, that are not able to be removed
effectively.

Finally, with a government that couldn't even keep up basic health,
ambulance, police (another government
department absolutely riddled with corruption - right up to the crime
commission) and other standards
during the recent financial "boom years" when they were rolling in tax
and stamp duty revenue -  with the world now looking like its going
into a depression, what hope have they got of providing even basic
essential services
with even less funds coming their way in the future ?

Of course, with all the drinking of bottled water, alcohol, soft
drink, energy drinks these days that people seem to consume, it could
be interesting to speculate on how much tap water the average person
drinks anymore.
debate how many people actually drink much tap water any more.

**Bullshit! The technology for removing heavy metals is well-known and easy
enough to implement.

**I accept that you don't like your govenment. None of which matters. ALL
state governments will need to look to water recycling very soon. What
Queenslanders need to do is understand the very basic technology required to
do that job. I have no faith that Queenslanders will be able to undstand
such things. Given the utter nonsense you've just posted, it is abundantly
clear that you have failed to do even basic research into the matter. You
seem to be happy to parrot some red-neck claptrap however.

Of course, with all the drinking of bottled water, alcohol, soft
drink, energy drinks these days that people seem to consume, it could
be interesting to speculate on how much tap water the average person

debate how many people actually drink much tap water any more.

**That would be their choice. I consume my water direct from the tap. I
fully expect the NSW government will commence water recycling very soon. I
will, of course, support such moves because I have done the basic research
into the matter. The NSW education system has prepared me for real life.

The best part about it is you should see the shit the push out
upstream! I have done some work for treatment plants upstream and they
are 10 times worse than what they are going to pump into wivenhoe.
Guess what, you are already drinking shit water!

Look at it the other way round. The percentage of water that is drunk is
tiny, most of it goes into toilets, showers, industry and gardens. What's
the sense in treating it all to the enormously high standards required for
drinking? There are plenty of places where the advice is to *not* drink the
reticulated water, and bottled drinking water is available everywhere at
very low prices.

Fully potable reticulated water is just one of the other anachronistic
conveniences that we're going to have to get used to doing without.

Don't waste your time, he will just hit back with more of his insults
to hide behind, that are of a "white trash"
level anyway.

From the posts on here, I would question the standards of his
educational system, particularly in relation to manners.

**You failed to do several things in your original post:

* You posted off topic.
* You failed to educate yourself adequately WRT state of the art water
recycling systems.
* You assume that the majority of the Australian population is as dumb as
Queenslanders. They're not. Most of the Australian population understands
that recycling will be necessary, unless serious steps are made to control
population growth and/or water usage.

**No. The whole point is that the OP failed to examine the reality of
things. SE Qld is the fastest growing urban area in the nation. Water
resources are rapidly being depleted. Some kind of water recycling MUST be
introduced, or some of the population needs to be removed.

**No need. You asked for ONE example. I provided three.

**Read the date on the article. Also, note these words:

"Orange County began purifying sewer water in 1976..."

Quoted text here. Click to load it

**Read the whole paper. Pay close attention to these words:

"For decades, the city of Windhoek in Namibia succeeded in stretching their
limited potable water
resources through strict water management, latterly including wastewater
reclamation and direct potable reuse."

Seems clear enough. You are a product of the Queensland education system,
right?

Quoted text here. Click to load it

**Pay close attention to the following words:

"NEWater is the brand name given to reclaimed water produced by Singapore's
public utilities. More specifically, it is treated wastewater (sewage) that
has been purified using dual-membrane (via microfiltration and reverse
osmosis) and ultraviolet technologies, in addition to conventional water
treatment processes.

There are three NEWater factories, located at the Bedok, Kranji Water
Reclamation Plants, and Seletar Water Reclamation Plant, producing about 20
million US gallons per day (0.9 m³/s). About 6% of this is used for indirect
potable use, which contributes 1 % of Singapore's potable water requirements
of 300 million US gallons per day (13 m³/s). The rest of the water is used
at wafer fabrication plants and other non-potable applications in
industries.

The fourth recycling plant, with a capacity of 32 million gallons per day
opened in Ulu Pandan on 15 March 2007. With this new capacity coming on
stream, NEWater can now meet 15 % of Singapore's water needs."

Again, clear enough to anyone with a reasonable education.

Recycling water is a choice. Australia has one of the highest Internal
Renewable Water Resources per capita in the world
<http://earthtrends.wri.org/pdf_library/data_tables/wat2_2005.pdf . It
is about ten times that of great Britain and over two times that of
the United States. Moving the water to South Eastern Queensland or
anywhere else in Australia only depends on what consumers are prepared
to pay. In addition, there is no limit to the amount of water that can
be distilled from sea water if consumers are prepared to pay the
direct and environmental costs.

I would probably choose recycled water if it was cheaper but it is
certainly not "inevitable".

I am very concerned about both , the immediate threat of recycled
medicines is a serious concern as filtering drugs is near impossible .

A man who can't contribute anything to the discussion without calling
anyone not in full agreement with him some sort of retarded,
uneducated red neck - even bringing up Joh (who left QLD politics over
20 years ago and is long forgotten by most) who has nothing to do with
the current water or government situation. Im surprised that something
about a "pedophile" hasnt been brought up yet.

Finally your infantile and repeated "Queensland bashing" comments are
a bit rich when many of the moronic comments, and insults seen on this
group for the past 7 years I have been reading it seem to come from
anywhere but QLD.  Would also like to point out, that in many parts of
QLD, are significant numbers of former NSW and VIC residents, many who
moved to QLD to retire.
