Permanent programmable LED lighting across a two-story roofline

Getting programmable color onto the rooflines, eaves and porch trim of a two-story house is no small job, and that is exactly the challenge this project takes on. The maker fitted a pro version of a permanent exterior LED product around the home, picked up while it was on sale, and the whole thing is now finished and running.

The scale is serious: 180 feet of lights plus roughly 90 feet of extension wire. To keep the install tidy, black 18/5 irrigation cable was bought for the roof run, along with white three-strand cable chosen to match the gutters. The lights sit tucked under the fascia and trim, throwing color across the siding, held about 4 inches off the wall. Around six connections were soldered by hand, and every extension and splice in the kit ended up used.

Access was sorted with a rented lift, booked for three days covering a weekend plus one extra day. The night results look great: the strips shift between blue, purple, red and warm white, with animated chasing effects running across the runs.

One open item: the job was planned for a single weekend, but the house proved more demanding than expected and extra rental days had to be added. The maker also promised a daytime picture in the comments, so the daylight appearance of all that cable work is still something I would love to see confirmed.

How did the maker cover the wire beyond the extensions that come included? A 180-foot run with another 90 feet of extension wire feels like a lot of length, and the two different cable types make me curious how the whole thing was joined up.

The maker actually covered this. Every included extension and every splice got used up on the install, and on top of that they bought 50 feet of black 18/5 irrigation cable for the roof and 50 feet of white three-strand cable to match the gutters.
