I see. A bit of web-searching tells me that if the response from the news-server gets lost, then the RFCs imply that the news-reader should retry. Although it's not required, the news-server _should_ be a bit cleverer about handling multiple identical posts without a Message-ID in a short period, and not assign different IDs. It seems that Pan defaults to letting the news-server assign the Message-ID, and this can be altered to make Pan assign it:

~/.pan2/preferences.xml contains:

change from 'false' to 'true'

Remake it if you want...

#! /bin/bash # Ascii to Fraktur unicode # Usage: asc2frak out.txt # or: asc2frak 255 )) && printf \\U$(printf "%08X" "$d") # Unicode UTF-8 (( d < 256 )) && printf "%s" "$c" # Echo other stuff done

I'd love a Creed 444, although I'd prefer a 7B. Really though, I'd want two of them, one for upstairs and one for downstairs so I can link them together.

Unfortunately I'm running out of space in my house for big bits of electromechanical goodness.

I really must build that outbuilding I've been planning, and move the strowger phone exchanges into it and free up some space in the house.

My inner geek thanks you for pointing that out. :-)

Tetris' colour graphics look good, though hardly an authentic 1980s look.

I made the same assumption but didn't bother to test it until now. It seems we're both right as a google search has turned up many hits, amongst which I found this example:

"ACHTUNG! ALLES LOOKENSPEEPERS!

Das computermachine ist nicht fuer gefingerpoken und

mitten grabben. Ist easy schnappen der springen werk,

blowenfusen und poppencorken mit spitzensparken. Ist nicht

fuer gewerken bei das dumpkopfen. Das rubbernecken

sichtseeren keepen das cotten-pickenen hans in das pockets

muss; relaxen und watchen das blinkenlichten."

HTH & HAND :-)

I've heard them calling it "the progress."

My guess is that when Fraktur was designed, ease of reading wasn't much of a concern. There weren't all that many readers to care about, after all. And as for the art, -- it still looks rather impressive.

(vk & jgs are a couple of the greats of ascii art & the basic pic was vk self portrait.)

Though I think you mean more like this:

#include

main() { long now; int col; char m[COLS+1],s[COLS+1]; int i,e,c;

/* seed random number generator */ time (&now); srand (now);

/* print fusion X's */ for (col = 0; COLS - col >= DEPTH0; col += DEPTH0) { for (i = 0; i < DEPTH0-1; ++i) putchar (' '); putchar ('X'); } putchar ('\n'); /* process input image */ while (memset(m,'\0',COLS+1),fgets (m, COLS+1, stdin)) { e = 0; s[COLS] = 0; for(i=0; i= DEPTH0 && i < COLS && (c = m[i - DEPTH0]) >= '0' && c out.dat

--This is not my code but I don't seem to have recorded the original author. It was posted to usenet long ago. iirc more than two level can be use by putting 1 2 3 etc. in the input file.

The code isn't to hard to figure out and might make a basis for an amusing display for a clock or a welcome message. Or a control screen only you can read :-)

Fraktur (in fact all blackletter faces) was inherited from the days before printing. If you write with a quill pen, you will get a very high ratio of difference in thickness between strokes made across and down. In those days, formal writing (which was done for books) was very different from casual handwriting, and books were treasured, precious objects, so enormous care was taken over the letter-forms, and some of them became highly decorative.
