Zenith TV upgrade question

Hi, I have an older 25" Zenith, model SJ2524VK5, main module 9-1130-3A, CRT # A63ADG31X.

This is a really nice working console with a swivel base, and the tube is in great shape. Just got it out from being stored for several years.

But, it has no S-Video in port.

What I would like to do is to buy and install a different board with S-Video in, & also what Zenith calls "SEQ" (for killer surround sound)

Also, if possible, I would like it to have the other ports for AV 'loop out' to have more interface flexibility with all my other home theater, games, & webtv stuff. I know this set is old, but I want to use it.

Can anyone tell me what higher or newer mainboard, with those better features, will work with this tube, & maybe point me towards a good source for one, new, used or rebuilt, or maybe even a non- functional one I could have repaired? (I have someone who can do the work for me)

Thanks in advance for any help.

TV sets are not built like computers. The newer model main boards will not fit to the older model cabinet layouts, or even match to drive the picture tube (CRT). There is a lot involved!

Basically, you have to buy a new TV set, if you want the new features. The performance of the new sets are far improved. As for the choice of the type of set, you would be best off to consider an LCD panel type set, even though they are more expensive. In the end, you will get what you pay for.

OK, I could live without`this set, but my woman is in love`with it, since it is in a great cabinet.

After doing some googling, I find that module 9-1054, or 9-1092 seem to have all the features *I* want. Those boards would seem to be older than the original.

Does anyone know whether they will work with that tube or how I can find out for sure?

I have just been been through an impromtu relocation after some drunken clown burnt down my building with fireworks and money is too tight right now for a big flat LCD set.

Thanks again.

Hi!

You might want to get two sets then...to do what you're proposing is possible, but it will be rather involved and the chances of what you get being as good as the set is now are not good.

With enough work anything is possible. You could certainly swap boards and make it work. However, what you have now is a good working TV set. To swap a board you will at least have to develop adapters for possible differences in the wiring. This may necessitate a schematic or service literature. At that point it might work fine, but most projects of this type require that you make more adjustments as the picture will not be right. Such adjustments may require specialized equipment or training to perform...which isn't to say that you cannot make such adjustments but the result may not be as good as the set you have now.

That said, you could drop in the new board, and everything could be fine. But if you have to adapt wiring or fit, don't bet on this working out. This happens about as often as most people win the lottery. :-)

What I'm trying to say is that you now have a very nice working TV set by your own description. If you try to swap boards you may have a headache at best and a ruined or hacked up set at worst.

Do yourself a favor--you've got what is a nice set. Keep it that way and enjoy it for what it is. Buy another set when time and money allow. Converting this one to be something it isn't is just moving the hassle of buying a new set that does what you want to the much more immediate future. Making this work will require significant time and effort.

There's those amplified converters that allow a TV with RF input only to accept RCA and S-Video inputs. Wal-Mart sells basic ones and they get very sophisticated the more you want to spend.

The only thing you can do is buy a RF modulator with an S-Video Port. Best Buy or Radio Shack have them. They aren't that expensive.
