My xbox will play/read cd's no problem but will not read a dvd. Is this a bad drive or could it be something else? If bad drive does it matter what model to replace it with? Sorry if wrong group?

It doesn't matter which X-Box DVD drive it is repalced with.
99% likely a new drive will fix your xbox. Any xbox-specific DVD drive will work.
