Sony CD-Player Issues: X111ES

I bought this player back in the early 90's. Sony X111ES, audiostack type. Worked fine for awhile but then.... The problems are kind of weird; it will do one of these when trying to load or play a disc:

A) Open disc tray but then refuse to close.

B) Refuse to read disc's TOC.

C) Will read TOC but then refuse to play.

Usually, when any of these happens, cycling the power is the only way to get it to go again (when it DOES play, though, it will do so w/o any further issue). I know it's not related to any particular disc (at least as far as the latter two issues go), since it will happen on any disc, new or old, scratched or not. Any ideas?

I seem to recall having problems with a 5v regulator transistor on these. It's one of those oversize D-line types up towards the top left of the board on the R/H side if I'm thinking of the right model. I seem to recall that the board usually looks pretty hot around it.

Maybe the CD Repair FAQ? :)

It may be as simple as a dead belt in the loading mechanism.
