Sony CCD-TR93 viewfinder goes off

I'm hoping someone here can help me. When the camcorder is switched into the camera or player mode, the viewfinder comes on for a few seconds and then goes off. Actually, the image is still there but the backlight goes out. It stays on longer when powered by the charger and won't come on at all with a nearly dead battery. I tried replacing the board the battery connects to (DC-DC converter?) but nothing changed. I also know that unplugging the LCD part of the viefinder lets the light stay on. Any ideas?

Sounds like a problem with the backlight inverter or maybe a flaky ribbon cable leading to the viewfinder area.

The cable looks OK and shows no signs of intermittence. Is the backlight inverter in the EVF ass'y? What components would work intermittently like that?

Most of the time this is caused by a bad backlight tube. I have some here if that helps.
