Scanner failure on HP all in one series

I have seen various problems in hp officeject and psc, most of which are related to the scanner. Bulbs going bad being the main problem there but now this one is funny. Machine came in with scanner failure, complaint is grinding noise. Easy i thought, clean the optics and replace the bulb. Nope, after doing all that the scanner still fails to find it's starting point and the motor stays engaged, hence the grinding noise. Any other suggestions on what could cause this? Model is PSC 2175 but it should not be model related.

I have the same problem with my 2175. At start up the scanner makes a repeated noise that goes on and on, and the printer is unuseable. CRAP hardware.

Interestingly, I have a 2175 that sometimes decides not to scan when the PC tells it to. Most times I can hit the (Black) start button and it will work. Sometimes it fails and if I turn it off and back on the scanner starts to repeatedly bang against the stops. When this occurs the only way that I have found to get it back to normal is to unplug it (vs. turn off) and leave it unplugged for at least a half hour. Then its fine, sometimes for weeks.
