RCA P52754AT Power Problems

About a year ago, my father-in-law began having problems with his RCA P52754AT "Twin Tuner" TV. The Power quit responding to the remote control. The remote control could still do everything else, but the power had to be cycled on the console itself. Several weeks later, the power shut down completely.

There are no service people close by their home, so as a computer technician, I am the de facto tv repair guy too.

Any ideas where I can begin?

Thanks,

Steve

RCA set in shutdown. Step one, connect the Chipper Check interface and special software and check to see if there are any stored error codes and what they mean. Step two, check all the smps voltages and standby voltages. Step three, check the system control including the data bus lines for proper signal voltage with o'scope.

If this is beyond your training, equipment, and abilities to understand, then call out an authorized servicer or a servicer that does lots of these and is properly equipped.

This is a CTC178 series; a difficult TV to troubleshoot. The inside of the TV comes out easily by removing the screws at the rear of the box, and unplugging the front panel control board and speaker leads. You can then transport the box to service facility that is familiar with these models.
