PC DVD burner eject problems

Not really looking for help with a fix but I found it a bit odd that the tray ejects fine as long as a disc is in it but I have to use the fail-safe manual eject with no disc in the tray. Must have something to do with the position of the mech that comes down on the top and holds the disc to the spindle hub(forget official name).

Hi Meat That would be the disc clamp and turntable. Problem could be just a slipping belt, and when there is the weight of a disc on the turntable, that's enough to break the magnetic 'sticktion' between turntable and clamp, along with the effort put in by the tray motor via the slipping belt, and thus get the deck on the move and dropping away from the tray. I've seen this problem times on regular hifi drives.

You may be basically correct. With no disc in place, the clamper magnet attracts the spindle hub with a greater force. So, a weak motor or slipping belt may not be able to overcome it.

So, you'll have to remove the cover and try to determine what's going on.

That makes sense Arf. The drive is only a year old maybe the belt got some lube on it? Next time I pull the covers to clean out the dust I'll have a look.
