Make 5v from 12v DC?

Any transistor that will do this?

There's lots of 5 volt regulator IC's that will do this - depends on your requirements. Current / power ratings, physical mounting considerations, how critical the application, etc.

A bipolar transistor can do it with a 5.6 volt zener diode referencing the base junction.

Try Googling "series regulator circuits".

What's your application? it all comes down to how much current and regulation you need. Maybe a three terminal reg like a LM78XX series might work.

Not on its own. But with a zener diode and a few components, yes. However, most would simply use a voltage regulator, as these tend to be more efficient, and give short circuit protection, etc. If you said the current requirements it would be easy to give a number.
