Does anyone know how to do a "Document Save" to a tiff file without making a copy. I just want to scan, I don't want to copy anything.

What software are you using? I have the basic "PaperPort " program and it lets me scan directly to the hard drive. The native format is .MAX but you can open them and resave to a lot of other formats, except .GIF. I scan old schematics, then open them, zoom into the scan and use the straighten and remove stray dots features before I resave them as a .BMP. Those are opened with another program to convert them to .GIF.
If the only thing you do with the second program is open the BMP and save it to GIF, and assuming that the second program is some kind of graphical image editor, you might be interested in ImageMagick,

Matt, I usually splice multi page schematics back together and clean up the seams one pixel at at time, if needed. If I am careful when I straighten a scan, I am only a pixel or two off from top to bottom so it is just a matter of filling in a few missing pixels where lines don't quite meet.
