DVD Recorder issues

I purchased multiple DVD recorders for transcribing my 8mm analog tapes and have had problems.

The first unit I purchased was an "ILO" from wal-mart. It did an OK job of recording on TDK discs, but could not initialize Maxell DVD+Rs. I returned the unit and purchased a "look-on" from Costco. This unit worked OK, but occasionally would freeze at the end of a DVD when full, and the unit would not respond unless power cycled. I returned that unit, and bought a daewoo from costco. This unit experiences the freezing as well. In addition, the encoding of one disk screwed up 3/4 of the way through one disc (blocky, intermittent).

Do I have a disc incomatibility here? I would have thought the unit could detect a problem and stop rather than freezing? Am I better off with a name Japanese Brand?

I plan to try another MFR disc, but would appreciate any insight into my problems.

Thanks

A client of mine purchased a couple of dozen Sony units to do live recording of various presentations--over a three day period--during a recent conference.

We had two of the units in each room with a VHS backup (recording audio from the speaker, and video from computer PowerPoint presentation).

We were forced to use the VHS backup several times. The Sonys would either freeze during the presentation, or fail to close out the disks. Often a faint ozone smell, or unusually high level of heat would emanate from the units before they gave up the ghost...sometimes the same symptoms on machines which performed as advertised.

I'd say attrition over the three days amounted to something like 25%. IOW, if you go withat least--'that' specific model of Sony (didn't record which one), you have a one in four chance of getting a dud...and that was just in the first three days.

From my experiences, Pioneer makes the best DVD writers.

Pioneers are good, although some of their models aren't cooled adequately and run hot.

On the advice of friends I recently got a BenQ DW1640 (same drive used by Plextor) and couldn't be happier with it. Fast, quiet, not one coaster yet in nearly 200 discs using Taiyo Yuden TYG02 DVD-R media. Here are links to the drive and media:
