DVD player & NO DISC error on all dvds

Howdy All

I'm trying to determine if this is something I'm able in attempting to repair, prior to taking the unit in.

I loaded a cracked (unknown to me) Netflix DVD into my Panasonic SC-HT900 HT system (holds 5 discs). There was no noise or anything & the unit returned the meessage that it couild not play this disc. This has happened before with cracked media.

However this time the unit now shows "no disc" to any media placed in it, even DVDs that were in the unit already & had played before.

I tired inserting other discs, turning it off & on w/o success.

I'm somewhat handy (but never opened a DVD player before) & I'd appreciate any advice as to what steps I might try in fixing this (it's out of warranty).

TIA Frank

Before you do take it in, just have a quick look at the top of the laser. There is a clip on cover around the lens, and I have had these get pulled partly off by the brush whiskers on those dreadful cleaning discs, getting caught in them, so a similar thing could have happened here. It causes the lens to become jammed so that it can't focus. It usually damages the clip on piece such that it cannot be refitted, but it can be just removed and discarded, with no immediate detrimental effect - it serves only to protect the area around the lens suspension, and perhaps help a little with preventing dust ingression to the optics. Got to be worth a look.

Thanks for the suggestion & confirmation. Tommorrow I'll try to remove the case to get at the laser. I'll look if something was moved when it tired to read the cracked disc.

Appreciate the help from all of you...though I'm the type that HAS to try something before followering kip's advice. Cheers
