Acer 5520 won't power up?

An Acer 5520 notebook.

Press power, the notebook powers on for a couple of seconds then powers off by itself. Then (without touching anything) it repeats the same power on/off cycle where the on is only a second) by itself over and over, until the battery is removed (which stops the cycle.)

Tried the remove battery/power charger and hold power on button for 45 seconds trick, but that didn't help. Charger seems to be working correctly (plugging it in lights the charge led).

Any suggestions?

It is probably a defective battery. There is a battery setting that can be changed in the device manager (XP) which will let the computer run off the battery until you can purchase a new one. Chuck

I agree it may be a bad battery, but bottom line, the computer won't boot so there is no hope of entering the device manager to change anything!

One would think it would work on the AC adapter, but it does not.

A lot of flap tops won't run with out a battery how ever, it may not be your problem.

Does the charge indicator every reach peak? (green light maybe?) If so, does it drop into yellow when you attempt to boot?

If the charge LED stays GREEN, or what ever that model uses for a charged battery and it does what you say, I would suspect a more serious problem with the laptop. You may want to observe these things.. you could possibly have a power supply dropping out on you. Some units have RED/GREEN LED's on them.. You could have a shorted component in the laptop like a HD etc..

It's a wonderful world we live in!...

Sounds like a Walmart Special! :)

Check/reseat memory; more than one memory module, try them one at a time. Pull harddrive(s) Pull battery and try booting up on AC adapter.

If nothing appears on screen, then probably hardware failure or internal connectors related.

Yeah, I'd call it as a clapped-out battery. Replace it, cycle it, & everything will probably be fine again.

Found it free on the web, and downloaded. Google found it quickly. But thanks for the pointer anyway.
