The $55 machine vision camera runs micropython and the software is all open source

Easy to code in a PC, and download by USB to the camera and then run the micro python program in the camera to do some image processing.

Similar things can be done with a Linux PC, a webcam and gambas, but the software must run on an energy hungry PC, whereas the micropython runs on the built in embedded controller which means it can run for days on end from batteries.

Since the modules are tiny, you could leave it lying around on the floor taking pictures of mice wandering into view to trigger an electronic mouse trap. A bit extragant, but has the makings of future more intelligent gadgets with vision.
