searching for light weight 3v to 7-8v dc/dc converter

Hello Everyone,

I am looking for a light weight (ca. 10 grams) 3v to 7-8v dc/dc converter to use in an elctric R/C plane. I have some basic electronics knowledge and would try a DIY cicuit if I could find one. It would be used to drive a Graupner 400 speed motor. The motor can draw 15 amps for short periods. I found what I was looking for at

22fly.com, but he does not seem to be actively selling these anymore. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find one to buy or at least a circuit digram that I might build one from.

Best Regards, Bill

Well, first off, if it draws 15A at 7 to 8V, then it's gonna draw much more at 3V, something like 50A or more assuming high efficiency, which you may not be able to get.

You need to determine how much power you really need, for how long. If it's not too long, you may be able to store up enough energy in a capacitor to supply the peak power.

Could you turn your problem upside down?

Find a 7-8V battery with a similar Watt-hour capacity (so that the size/weight is similar), drive the major load directly from that, and use a switching regulator to provide the lower current 3V.

If it's possible then someone over on the E-zone ( THE discussion forum for electric RC flight) will know how to do it, or more likely they will already have done it!

If they can't help you I'd give up!

It might be easier to rewind the motor with half the number of turns and thicker wire - or use another motor.
