newbie question on variable transformer

Nov 03, 2004 5 Replies

hi,

im currently doing research on fuses. my research basically involve of single phase variable transformer and it is connected to the fuse (im currently research on). the secondary voltage capacity current is up to 700A however right now i can only increase the current up to 80A. I am using the AC/DC clamp metre to measure the current that I have gradually increasing. My question is how do i increase the current up to 200A, i have try to increase the coil turns but the AC/DC clamp metre doesnt show any reading. What equipment shall i use instead of the ac/dc clamp metre ? any advice/comments are highly appreciated. thanks.

What sort of transformer are you using? What sort of load are you using, or are you relying on short-circuit current? It is quite possible that your test circuit has enough resistance in it that it is limiting the current in your load circuit. Is your ammeter rated to 200A?

With wanting to be rude, I think from the questions you ask and the impression they develop of your knowledge you need to learn a lot more about electricity theory before you play with circuits capable of delivering 200 amps.

200 amps is serious fire stuff even at very low voltages.

You have not really described you test circuits enough for us to give any real advice as to why it does not work as you expected.

That's half the fun, though I never had anything capable of delivering

200A when I was a kid. Didn't stop me burning holes in everything I could get my hands on when I got my first 40A power supply. And first collection of camera flash capacitors. And my first 180V pwer supply (which taught me about safety the hard way).

I didn't have any car batteries... I couldn't afford them on my pocket money. Besides, despite being pretty alright about me messing around permenantly with that kind of stuff, I expect my parents wouldn't have liked the idea quite so much of me having basically a very large bucket of acid in my room.
