Try:
They sell silicon photo diodes that have been "tuned" using thin film optical interference band-pass filters(390-1200 nm).

Sorry maybe I wasn't clear on that - I don't really need one that is tuned - just one that reacts to visible light, all the photodiodes I see are IR devices.

Try a silicon pin diode. They have a spectral response from near IR to around 350nm or so.
Those in clear packages should respond to visible light.
those in dark packages are filtered against visible light.

Whats the characteristics of the light source? Laser, broadband, wavelength, source-detector distance, source intensity, etc.
