Inverter design

Do we have anyone here that's knowledgeable about inverters? I'm just starting to gather information on 3 phase inverters but this is a new area for me. The idea is to take a single phase input around 420V

50/60Hz and generate a three phase output at the same voltage; possibly at the same frequency or possibly variable frequency from 10 to 100Hz. The load would be a motor; up to about 2.2kW max but with a high starting current.

Any suggestions on where to get more info on techniques?

Dave, Do you really want to build one of these? There are many commercial units on the market readily available secondhand through ebay which are very reliable and offer a whole host of control features. You should not have to pay much if you are careful. I tend to buy up Siemens micromaster units and rarely pay more than £30. I have a number in daily use in my workshop and never had a failure.

If you do want to build your own then you will need a whole pile of devices during develpment as they could pop easily.

I think it would be a satisfying project, albeit probably also frustrating and lengthy, but if I could find a 415 in/out inverter at that price I admit it would be crazy to design from scratch.

high voltage VFD's (variable frequency drives) sell cheap on ebay, To my knowledge, they work by recifying the incomming power and remodulating it, if youre already taking in high enough voltage dc, it should be a minor effort to tap into a vfd at the point where the power is dc

you might also want to look up phase converters using idler motors and capacitors

How about this for some basics?

Good luck if you 'roll your own'

You might try asking your local electricity company if they will supply you 3-phase. I got it in a domestic property since I was heating by electricity. That will not address the speed issue of course. You would need to be careful on changing the frequency too much too.
