Fiber Optics for the Power Sector: The National Power Grid in any country is the high-voltage electric power transmission network, connecting power stations and major substations and ensuring that electricity generated anywhere within the country can be used to satisfy demand elsewhere. In order to monitor, supervise and control the power grid in an effective and efficient manner a hierarchical load dispatching systems are employed. In order to perform the load dispatch function efficiently, online acquisition of power system data and its real time processing is performed by computer based Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. There has been a significant improvement in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure in power sector in the last decade. The telecommunication facility presently available between power stations and substations comprises PLCC, Microwave and Optical Fiber Communication systems. The Optical Fiber Communication system for the transmission of speech, data and other signals is becoming increasingly important because of its advantages viz; low attenuation, high band width, small physical cross-section, immunity to electromagnetic interferences, and security. Though the system capacity of the existing fiber network in most of the countries is sufficient to meet to the requirements of power system control at the present time, the network is going to become highly complex in near future due to addition of new generating stations and sub-stations. Further, the fiber network facility is to be extended to other users beyond those required for the operation of the power system network, such as companies, banks, government departments and railways. For such users, the inception of the World Wide Web (internet) transformed the trend from a predominantly voice traffic to carrying data as well as video traffic. The growth in internet traffic would cause the capacity of the fiber network to rapidly saturate and then the network would experience fiber exhaustion. Thus the fiber network capacity is required to be enhanced. Since Replacement of optical cable would be highly expensive. Also, since the fiber network systems operate in the second transmission window, the increase in transmission capacity would result lowest attenuation coefficient, thus expanding the repeater distance in the network. .Therefore in order for the network to operate at higher bit-rate, a dispersion management scheme is needed.
